In fact it's quite impossible to get a living permit for a regular job. Either you'll come for education reasons or an Indian company would send you to work for them. Read more about in the official link suggested.

Depends what language you speak if you speak french chose Geneva if you speak German I would chose Zurich since the city is bigger and has more jobs to offer. Be aware unless you are an EU or EEA citizen you will need a work visa and of course you need to be fluent in the local language ( depends on the Canton you decide to live )

Help I am working abroad in Switzerland: need to justify request for Cost of Living adjustment

Help I am working abroad in Switzerland: need to justify request for Cost of Living adjustment?
I have ask my company for a weekly per diem to supplement the higher cost of food, personal care and transportation here (I moved here from Atlanta). They asked me to prove my case. Does anyone know of a quick and free way create and present a cost of living comparison btw. Atlanta, USA - Lausanne, CH?
Other - Careers & Employment - 1 Answers

I think you need not to compare the standard of living of the country of origin to where you are living to day. What you need is to spell out all the cost you are incurring per day/ week/ month. The total/sum of it should be compared with what you are currently paid per day/week/month. If what you are currently paying/ cost of living is greater than what you are paid, then you have proved the case. But also even if what you are paid is greater than the cost of living, the magnitude should count. If you can prove that you missed some important information on the cost of living at the time you entered the contract with your company. But also if there are economic incidences that have arisen after the contract, like inflation, economic depression and the alike unforeseeable incidences;those again will be enough proof.

Can anyone help me to find a job/paid internship in social work in Toronto

Can anyone help me to find a job/paid internship in social work in Toronto?
Hi, I am a future graduate student from Switzerland in social work. I am looking for a job or a paid internship in Toronto from September 2009 to August 2010. I had a lot of work experience with children, teenagers and disabled persons. I speak French, English and Arabic. Does anybody know some institutions that can offer a position in Toronto?

You and countless thousands of others are future graduates looking for internship work, too. Canada is not some haven where jobs are plentiful, well paying and easy for anyone anywhere to get. Our economy is doing very badly with hundreds of thousands of Canadians losing their jobs what few jobs there are left - yes, even within the field of social work - will not go to foreigners. Sorry but that's the way it is. Your university might be a better source for you.
2 :
try job search engines like jobbank.gc.ca workopolis.ca mazemaster.ca
3 :
I would recommend looking into community organizations such as shelters, or agencies that specialize with children - such as the Children's Aid Society - they tend to take on recent graduates. The fact that you are trilingual is of benefit to you. Try some of these sites for names of agencies that you could contact. http://www.metrac.org/programs/info/tororg.htm http://www.toronto.ca/abc/affiliates.htm http://ourfaves.com/c/toronto/active-life/community-organizations-volunteering One more thing - don't get discouraged by negative comments - yes there is a recession, however there are jobs to be had and companies are still hiring. Social work is an occupation that is of demand, especially in these times, so don't dismay. Good luck with your job search!

Swiss Saver Pass number doesnt work for GA Switzerland option in trenitalia site

Swiss Saver Pass number doesnt work for GA Switzerland option in trenitalia site ?
Me and my wife will be visiting Italy and then travelling to Switzerland by train . We have bought a swiss saver pass from rail europe . I'm trying to purchase tickets from Milan to Visp from trenitalia website , there is a fare type "GA Switzerland" which I understand is for swiss pass holders. But our swiss pass is 8 digits and the site requires a card number with 7 digits . Are we not supposed to select this fare type? What should I do ? I would really appreciate if any body could let me know how should I go about booking the ticket . Thanks

The GA isn't the same as the Swiss Pass, it covers the same routes but is for Swiss residents, and goes for at least a month, usually a year. Don't know what you should do, though, sorry. You could try emailing the Swiss railroad company. (Or Trenitalia)

I would like to find an employer in Switzerland to hire me on, and help set me up with some kind of lodgings. Can someone please email me some places that I can look into. Since it is very difficult to get a work permit in Switzerland, I would suggest to contact you school in Canada and have them do the research for you. There are 2/3 culinary schools in Swizterland, you may get a job thru them. Also, major hotels may hire you, so if you work at an international hotel chain, transfer can be easy.(i.e. InterContinental Hotels, Hiltons, etc. etc.)

Honestly ummm, in computers there's a little red switch on the back that changes the voltage from 120V (in the U.S.), and Europe which has higher voltage (I can't remember what it is though). perhaps you could look around for this witch, or check the wall sockets in your house/ apartment for what voltage they run on and see if this trend is true, if it runs on I think it's 225V and the wall socket is only 120V then there's your problem right there! :D

3 :
If you are thinking about getting a loan, then you should know about the basics before you get started. If you understand the basic dos and donĂ¢€™ts of loans, then you will be better equipped to find the best loan for your needs. Whatever type of loan you are applying for, you should follow these basic rules to help you find the best deal. When searching for a loan, it pays to do your research. Look for as many suitable lenders as you can, so that you can find the very best deal. There are many online pages that<!--allow you to compare loan rates from a variety of lenders. As well as looking online, check out your high street banks and mortgage lenders for deals too. You may find the loan that you need here, http://best-loans.awardspace.com/ If possible, try and avoid taking out secured loans. If the amount you need to borrow is small or you have good enough credit to borrow without collateral, then do so. Although unsecured loans have higher rates, they are less risky because your home will not be at risk if you cannot make the payments.Try and take a loan out over the shortest period-->you can afford. Taking loans out over 10 years or more can be risky, and you cannot be sure what your financial situation will be at that time.

he reforms Obama wants work in the Netherlands and in Switzerland

he reforms Obama wants work in the Netherlands and in Switzerland?
Now how many people PER CAPITA are taxpayers in these countries as compared to people per capita in the United States? And besides that, people in those countries are typically good and sensible parents, as opposed to newborns born to drug-addicted mothers, children being brought up by parents who use little or no common sense in the care of their children. Edna, we'd be happy here too if we didn't have to worry about thugs from projects breaking into our elderly parent's home and killing them and all the other wonderful things that the welfare system brought about.

And both nations are consistently rated as having the happiest populations of earth. Then again what would the right have if they can't wallow in misery?
5 :
Be genetically different baby!
6 :
Ohh great !!! So the USA now gets to be either Switzerland or the Netherlands ! Just fine !! The economic output of Texas is almost double that of the Netherlands alone !
7 :
Google: "best place to have cancer" You will find that its Cuba. They have Universal Health Care, worse doctors than USA, and still more people survive cancer there than they do in the USA, because of their health care system and preventative measures. They are much poorer and less sensible than people in USA, so you are not making a point. "If someone wants to live in a country with Socialized Health Care, there are plenty of options available." Wrong, you have obviously never traveled or are ignorant to immigration procedures. You cant just fly to another country and instantly become a citizen. With most countries, you have to have gone to college in order to get a job there and have a work sponsor. You must live in a country for a certain amount of years on approved visas and extensions before you can ever apply for citizenship and take advantage of health benefits. Majority of uninsured people, are out of work, so they are not the ones who have these high skills to get jobs in other countries, and they are not rich to buy their way into the countries with investor visas. Therefore, if someone here is uninsured, and wants to move to those countries to take advantage of their health care system, then they must first spend 2 to 4 years in a USA college, then they must wait to find a job sponsor in that country, which is another year to 3 years, then they must go through all the visas and get approved, which wont happen if they have felonys or a lot of debt, then they must wait another 5 to 10 years on those visas to become a citizen. So all in all, it would take at least 12 to 20 years for an uninsured person in USA to be able to use the health care in another country. Not to mention all the money that would take to make the move, they might as well forget health care and spend that money on doctor bills here in USA. Besides, the uninsured have no money, or else they would be insured, so is no options for them, as you say. Im self employed, I want to be a citizen of Thailand. I stay there 6 months out of the year, and dont need to work a job there, but I can not stay there longer than 6 months unless I get a work sponsor. I cant get a work sponsor, because I am self employed and did not go to college (I own several websites that bring income in). They got rid of their investor visa, so I cant invest money to stay there, my only option is work sponsorship. So its a catch 22. Even if I had a work sponsor, I would still have to live there on visas for 10 years to apply for citizenship, and that doesnt guarantee that they will grant it, and nothing guarantees they will grant each visa since I have to apply for extensions each year.
8 :
And the day they will work in the USA pigs will fly.
9 :
I see, so what you are saying here... "newborns born to drug-addicted mothers, children being brought up by parents who use little or no common sense in the care of their children." is that Americans are too stupid to handle government healthcare. I have a little more faith in the American public.
10 :
sooner the better it will be great for the usa we need to stop being a second rate country , with a second rate health system
11 :
They are 1/100th of our population. They pay 50% in taxes, do a little more research. Their system would not work here, just on size alone.

Work attire in Switzerland

Work attire in Switzerland?
I am about to move to Switzerland, and recently had my ears pierced (I am male) - I read that work attire in Switzerland was very casual - I hope to get an office job which may involve some client interaction (probably in Zurich) - will I be expected to remove my earrings?
Other - Switzerland - 7 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
unless you got multiple piercings (where the entire outer pinna is studded) or the really long bar-type double-piercings, i wouldn't worry about it; single piercing should be ok. work dress in Switzerland ranges from conservative to casual, though in general, i find the Swiss to be better dressed than Americans; they may not be as flamboyant as the rest of Europe, but men do dress with style and (more) flair than in the States. i'd worry more about that (especially if you're the blue shirt+khakis kind of guy).
2 :
you should ask your employer about it. that's simple.
3 :
Well my husband's grandfather has an earring, if that helps any... I think one earring per ear should be fine, nothing too big, though it'll probably depend on the job. As you might imagine, the banks and insurance companies are typically more conservative than...uh, are there any other industries here? Anyway, you may be expected to wear a suit, but tasteful earwear should be fine.
4 :
They are pretty casual about things like that, as long as it's tasteful. If they don't want you to wear it to work they will say so.
5 :
First of all we are not living in the middle Ages anyway! Also not in Switzerland even if for some people Switzerland is cheese, Alps and chocolate what it's all about we are not that complicated. I think if you will work in a bank or at a Hotel and you are tongue, lip or eyebrow's pierced it could be a problem. But earrings is no problem! I even got my nose pierced and work in a office job! Wish you all the best for your new start!
6 :
No, chances are you won't unless you are aiming for an ultra-conservative field such as private banking. Zurich is so hip anyway, you'd be out of place to not have a piercing. My husband works for the telcom industry, seems like these days anything goes, even Marilyn Manson t-shirts.
7 :
No . Most men in switzerland have pierced ears, especially if they are from farming family. Casual dress is ok.

Entering it into the "Ask" windows (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/ask;_ylt=Ar1dqOyrsjQw77dFj1WCH1kazKIX;_ylv=3 ) would have given you instant access to plenty of very good and longish answers. Here are the main things you must provide if you only want to apply for a work and residence permit for Switzerland: - Highly specialized professsional skills neither a Swiss or a EU citizien has. You must prove this with the appropriate certificates (internationnaly recognised university diploma and such). - Knowledge of fluency in either German, French, Italian (in very rare cases, if applying for high positions in management, English would do) If you can't cope with this, better forget about dreaming of living in Switzerland. Consider that the worldwide downturn had a very siginificant influence onto the Swiss labor market, chances even for Swiss and EU citizens to get a job are very limited, too.

I speak French and currently learning German. Maybe in the future I will work in Switzerland, in either Francophone or Germanophone regions. I wonder if, in those regions, Italian would be useful or valued as a skill when searching for a job? Should I pick it up as well, or just focus on my German? Thanks.

If you speak French and German, you would be in a very good position to get a very good job in Switzerland, only the bordering "canton" between the French and German part are fully bilingual, the other don't necessarily speaks both. So you will have the edge The Italian part of Switzerland represent only 6.5% and mostly in the Canton of Ticino. If you are looking to ad another language to your "repertoire" I would rather learn English which is widely spread throughout the major cities.
2 :
It wouldn't hurt, at least in Zurich. Zurich has thousands of Italian speakers, many of whom barely speak German. Most are Italians, not Ticinese. It depends on the job though, in my experience the business world doesn't use Italian much (but that could be just my experience), but if you're doing something like sales to individuals, definitely go for it.

If you have lost your passport you must report the loss to the nearest police station and obtain a replacement passport/temporary passport from the Embassy of Ireland, KirchenfeldstraĂƒÅ¸e 68, 3005 Bern, Switzerland. A temporary passport may also be issued by the Honorary Consul of Ireland, Claridenstrasse 25, 8027 Zurich. Austria is member of the European Union, same as Ireland. Temporary travel documents of Irish citizens are also recognized in Austria. Although there are no border controls between Switzerland and Austria you should not risk to travel without proper documentation. Other - Switzerland - 2 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
I'm explaining you the simple rules: In Switzerland, you need a diploma as a physical therapist in order to work in the corresponding profession. Assistants are not known, you therefore wouldn't be able to work in Switzerland. As for info about the profession, please visit this website: http://www.physioswiss.ch/ (German, French, Italian - one must be fluent in one of these at least in order to apply for a job).
2 :
I looked into this briefly when my husband was being considered to move to Zurich inc, headquarters. As mentioned above, I do not think that the PTA position exists in Switzerland, but honestly I do not recall specifics. I do remember that their association website was in German and I believe you do have to speak German to practice there...and if in Zurich, most likely swiss-german. So if you do speak German, I would go to their association website...they most likely have the information you need there.

Are you saying that your deductions from income were more than they should have been for the number of weeks you worked and that therefore you are entitled to some refund? If so, file a Swiss tax return at the end of the year declaring your income and the tax you paid. I would recommend using a local accountant to help you with this.

You have a work permit/visa for Switzerland. You do not have one for Canada. Canada and Switzerland do not share their visa system. Each country operates completely independent of each other. I have already been accepted to the Wharton School of Business, which has the best undergraduate business program in the world. Would it be possible for me to work in Switzerland? Can you make a lot of money there? (I am interested in finance). What languages do they speak there? Do such countries have a good way of life? What other information should I know about this? Thank you.

Switzerland is a wonderful country. There are four national languages in the country, French, German, Italy and Romansch. It would be best for you to learn German as that is the primary language in the cities where most of the financial businesses are. The easiest way for you to work in Switzerland would be to join a company in the US that has international offices and then once you are working, look for internal postings in Europe and talk to your manager about what steps you would need to take to work abroad.

i want to live and work in switzerland or a nordic country

i want to live and work in switzerland or a nordic country?
Ă¯»¿If you train for one job in one language how difficult is it to transition and do the job in another country using a different language? I'm asking this question because I live in the USA, am 22 years old, and speak English and French fluently and want to train for a job here but move to either Switzerland or a Scandinavian country. I have, so far, an associate's degree in arts (studied in English) and plan to get a bachelor's degree in probably either a science or engineering. I don't have an ideal career as long as I make enough money to support myself and my future family and have a work-life balance. However, this means that I will be undertaking my studies using the English language and not French, Swiss German, Italian, Swedish etc... Which sort of careers would have an easier transition and which ones would be more difficult? I imagine mechanical engineering to be more transferable than, say, a doctor. A doctor would have to know what tachycardia is in Swedish while an engineer would have to know math and equations. Right? So my three main questions are: 1: Which sort of careers (what should I major in) are in good demand in Switzerland and the Scandinavian countries? 2: Which careers would have an easier time transfering to being used in another language? Or which careers would I still be able to use English in despite living in, say Finland? 3: What about teaching English and/or French in Switzerland or a Scandinavian country as a career? I still like America and it's people, please don't get me wrong, but I much prefer the way those people live. By the way I have French citizenship and only a green card from the USA.

This is a travel related forum, not a place for socio-economical questions (although that they are asked all the time). A better online resource to ask your kind of question is the the EnglishForumSwitzerland (http://bit.ly/8XDN0Y ). So, please don't expect too many good answers here. For questions about Scandinavia, please go the the approproiate forums. For now: 1.) Engeneering (IT in particular) or banking. Languages as such are a not the base for getting a job here - the majority of people living in Switzerland speak two, three or even more of them anyway. 2.) Same as above 3.) You need a university degree for teaching English or French. Too many others try to do the same thing, your chances to get hired for appropriate jobs are very slim. Good news: If you have French citizenship you can live and work freely in Wily Tell's own country. The only thing you need is a working contract and you'll automatically be granted a residency permit. And last but not least: US green card holders are no longer exempt from the visa obligation for short stays in Switzerland. If you want to see and travel the country (which I recommend) and decide later, make sure to bring a French passport.

1. Not sure, but I'd go with something that interests you so you're not stuck in a field you hate. 2. Probably just about anything. You do know that in Finland they speak fantastic Englsh, right? 3. Be prepared to make little money. Teaching doesn't pay well.

Can UK passport move to Switzerland freely for residence and work

Can UK passport move to Switzerland freely for residence and work?
I'm a third year uni student studying accounting and Finance, I hope to move to Switzerland after graduation and look for jobs there. So I got a few questions, Anyone could help me? 1. Can UK passport holder reside and work in Switzerland with out any application of VISA or Residence permit? 2. What kind of skill is the Swiss labour market looking for? or in shortage? I might stay in UK for Master or CFA or ACCA after graduate, this would effect my choice of subject. 3. Can foreign people acquire real estate property there fairly easily ( I mean any restriction due to the nationality of the buyer?) 4. Which city would be nice to live in? ( in terms of price level and opportunity and of course the general living standard of that area) 5. If working in a swiss bank is it english the prevalent language for paper works etc? or the local language? I will learn French and German but i wonder if i have to be a advanced speaker? 6. Is the only way of obtaining swiss passport is by birth or marriage, no other ways?

1. Can UK passport holder reside and work in Switzerland with out any application of VISA or Residence permit? NO I dont beleive so - since swtizerland is NOT a FULL member of the EU http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Switzerland_and_the_European_Union 2. What kind of skill is the Swiss labour market looking for? or in shortage? I might stay in UK for Master or CFA or ACCA after graduate, this would effect my choice of subject. profesional and advanced skills - you will need to find out 3. Can foreign people acquire real estate property there fairly easily ( I mean any restriction due to the nationality of the buyer?) probably no miore rstrictions than anywhere else - but you have to pay taxes and this will NOT get you any automatic citizenship rights. Switzerland is VERY strict on foreigners immigrating to their country. 4. Which city would be nice to live in? ( in terms of price level and opportunity and of course the general living standard of that area) Thats going to have to be something you want to decide on - I personally would like tio live in Geneva - home of the EU and some UN offices - a truely international city 5. If working in a swiss bank is it english the prevalent language for paper works etc? or the local language? I will learn French and German but i wonder if i have to be a advanced speaker? Yes you would have to be a fluent speaker and its french in the west (geneva) and german in the east (basel and zurich) and italian in the south (sion) 6. Is the only way of obtaining swiss passport is by birth or marriage, no other ways? you can immigrate - if you are eligible - as a skilled worker - but the process takes well over 10 years!!! marriage will also take more than 10 years too!!!

Yes you should be fine with French. It's one of Switzerland's official languages.
2 :
Not necessarily. For some bizarre reason a lot of people in the German parts don't speak French and vice versa. Even then, Swiss German has its own dialect using some French words as well. English is a common second language, but if you want to make your life easier I'd move to a French speaking city.
3 :
Regarding life OUTSIDE work I'd say that you will have no problems getting by either with French or English (it depends on the region you might be moving to), however, as regards work this might be more difficult and if indeed you do speak French (I don't know what work you are looking for or your background etc,) I'd also advise to move to the French speaking part of Switzerland. Our company, for example, simply would not have any work for you NOT speaking/writing any German. BTW, I assume that you know how to write French.

That depends what doctor you are. Docs in Zurich and Geneva earn more than the ones in other Cantons. And it depends if you have your own Praxis or not. They normally have a fix income for each month. But the big money comes from all the extras, like surgery tax, patient tax from the hospital, consultations in the Praxis etc. I'd say for a doctor in ZH or GE the fix-salary starts from 8.0000-9.000 and can go up until ???

2 :
dude, don't try to get a chocolate factory job. The oompa loompas work harder for less pay. They're being employed by most chocolate factories as there is no "minimum wage" for them.
3 :
Gidday mate :-) It's not my intention to disappoint you, I'm simply confronting you with reality: You are eligible for jobs here only if you can provide very sophisticated skills a Swiss or EU citizen doesn't have. Otherwise (and especially without fluency in either German, French or Italian), your chances are down to zero. It's just about the same if I would like to get a job in Australia without speaking English and without any special skills that are required for the Oz labour market. Still, to answer your original answer: Wages vary for a simple worker (from about 2'500 Sfr) to astronomically high salaries if employed as a leading manager (millions seem to become the rule for those these days).
4 :
The higher your education, the easier it is to get a job if you only speak english (universities, international companies). Other jobs are difficult to get without speaking a native language. It really depends on what your qualifications are.

Live in Switzerland, an independent contactor to a US company and get paid to US bank. What US taxes apply

Live in Switzerland, an independent contactor to a US company and get paid to US bank. What US taxes apply?
I want to know how much and what kind of taxes I will have to pay the US government in the situation where I would live in Switzerland working remotely from my home as an independent contractor (1099) to a US company and I would be paid to a US bank account. If possible, I would also like to know what taxes I would have to pay to the Swiss government.

Yes Uncle Sam needs your money! It would be a good idea to check with your banker.
2 :
You pay no US taxes unless your total earnings equals more than 70,000 USD for a tax year and you live at least 3/4 th's of a year out of the US. At the American embassy they will have a special 1040 form and attachments for guys like you and me. Swiss taxes? If you are paid directly then your company has to organize that, at least in most countries. American embassy could clue you in on local policy, too.
3 :
As a US citizen, you will be taxed by the US on your worldwide income. I am not familiar with Swiss Tax law, but I am sure that if you are a resident there, they will tax you as well. The upside to this is that you will be able to take a tax credit (not a deduction) on your US tax return for the taxes paid to a foreign country. Credits are better than deductions because they reduce your tax dollar for dollar, while a deduction reduces your taxable income. Enjoy Switzerland, you lucky....!
4 :
As an independent contractor you are responsible for all us taxes federal & state. As for what youhave to pay to the Swiss I don't think anyting. But I would check with a financial advisor, maybe one from the company you work for.
5 :
You haven't said whether you are a US citizen (I assume you are not a green-card holder). If you are not a citizen, then income you earn from performing services outside the US is not taxable by the US. If you are a citizen you may still qualify as a resident of Switzerland under the US-Switzerland income tax treaty; I would have to look that up. In that case, you may be exempt from US income tax, but might have to pay self-employment tax; there are a couple of unknown factors that would need to be investigated there, too. Finally, if you are a citizen and are not eligible for any other exemption, you may be eligible for the foreign earned income exclusion mentioned above. You should consult a qualified tax advisor for definitive advice as well as for advice as to your Swiss tax obligations. These vary from canton to canton.
6 :
I assume you are already living in Switzerland or have the immigration sorted out. According to my knowledge of the international tax rules, you would not be taxed in the US, although as a US citizen you still would have to fill out some US tax forms. In Switzerland, services offered are due to the Swiss VAT of 7,6% if the turnover is above CHF 75000 per year (only from the second year on). The net self-employed income (expenses deducted) is due to the Swiss social tax called AHV (8-10%, depending on turnover) plus then there are the normal income taxes which very much depend on the place you live in Switzerland - and of course the amount of money you earn totally. The highest income tax rates (applicable at income of around CHF 150'000 and above, for the exceeding amount) are between 22% and 42% - that's the range between the different places to live!!! With more information about the place you are living and your other income I could offer you some more detailed information. Ask anything you like by e-mail. BTW: It does not matter at all, where the bank account is... Greetings from Switzerland

I work for a UK company but moving to Switzerland - Which country do I pay income tax in

I work for a UK company but moving to Switzerland - Which country do I pay income tax in?
We are moving to Switzerland in April for my husbands job. He will obtain Swiss residency B status and we have been led to believe that I and our children will automatically obtain the same status. I will be retaining my job in the UK but working from home in Switzerland and commuting to London once a month for a few days at a time. We are having a nightmare trying to find out if I will be subject to UK income tax or, preferably, Swiss income tax. Please can anyone help?

you pay income tax on the nationality of the corporation and you named your company's nationality bi stating it was a UK company. When you write but in a sentence negative issues should follow. A little grammar I learned as a kid in American schools. And yeah I love bi people because they have a nice butt. From the French couple wishing you and yours a happy Valentine's Day.
2 :
You pay tax based on where you reside, where you earn income or hold assets and even nationality in some cases. If your employment point is Switzerland, you will pay tax in Switzerland on your income (and other assets), but if you reside across the border in France, you would pay tax in France. If you have sources of income in the UK whilst you live in Switzerland you would still need to file tax returns in the UK - and may want to because you may be having tax deducted on some income which you may be able to claim back. If your permanent residence moves to Switzerland - i.e. this is not a temporary arrangement - you can change your residential status in the UK. I am a Brit living and working in Switzerland and me and my wife are filing tax returns in the UK, USA and Switzerland. In theory I don't get taxed twice, but it is complicated. In Switzerland you should find somebody to help you file your tax returns when you have all the tax-related documentation for the previous year. It will cost you a few hundred Swiss Francs. Your employer will probably deduct withholding tax from your salary in Switzerland, in much the same way as tax is deducted from your salary in the UK. For your taxes in the UK, you need to establish what your residential status is. Your local tax office should be able to help you and there is a ton of information at the Inland Revenue web site to help you work out what you need to do. I doubt if you will need any paid assistance to file UK taxes.

All GPS units will work everywhere. The GPS satellites that the units use cover the entire world. The only issue is maps. You just need to make sure you get or can buy the maps for where ever you are or will travel to. Garmin has a pretty good selection of maps but just to be on the safe side ask before you buy any brand.
2 :
If you're buying this in the US, the following Garmin nuvis have European maps: 275T, 775T, 1370T. This is not to say you can't buy European maps for the others, but these particular models come with these maps

Well, which is your nationality? For non-European residents it's quite difficult or even impossible to get a working and living permit. Exceptions: The employer can make believe that he won't find someone with your qualification inside Europe - perhaps due to a job in contact with persons in your country of origin? Or an international company would send you to Switzerland to work if you had worked in your home country for them before.

You can work 20 hours per week if you first obtain a student visa from the embassy in the US, then you obtain a "permis de sejour", then once you find a job, you can apply for permission to work from your university, then a work permit. You are allowed to work more hours if you stay during the school breaks. Americans are entitled to work student jobs as long as you have a "permis"... it's just the question of finding a job that's the hard part.

I worked for a year in Geneva as and au pair. The best job ever! I was with a great family! I was a student taking french classes and getting to travel all over Europe on the weekends. Pretty good money, room and board, bus card, and use of a car but I didn't need to use it b/c the bus/train system is awesome. I wish the US would try something like it. Switzerland is the most beautiful country and there is so much to see and do. The Swiss people are very friendly and warm.
