If you are a U.S citizen and want to reside and work in Switzerland would you need a work permit?

Absolutely...and it is very difficult to get. Use site below to research/request visa info.

US citizens can only stay in Switzerland for 90 days out of every 180 days as a tourist. Getting a long-term visa is difficult, and permanent residency is next to impossible. You cannot just move there, just as non-Americans cannot just choose to move to the USA. For an American to get work in Switzerland the employer will need to prove that the job cannot be done by either a Swiss citizen or a citizen of the EU. Therefore you will need skills that are not generally available in Europe.

Legally yes. I moved over there from the United States to be a nanny and I was required to get one before I came but I know there are some people who don't. It really isn't much of a hassle to get one either :) Enjoy Switzerland!
