If your card is Visa or Mastercard or has a Cirrus logo, then it should work in Swiss ATMs. Make sure you have a 4 digit PIN.
2 :
As long as it's a Visa or Mastercard it will work in Switzerland. Some places may want you to type in your PIN so make sure you know it!

US Citizen moving to Switzerland to work, will have "Local employment Status" Tax Question

US Citizen moving to Switzerland to work, will have "Local employment Status" Tax Question?
Hi All, My company is relocating me to Switzerland however, I'll become a local employee in our Swiss entity. Wondering if anyone can advise me on the TAX implications. Appartenly you need to pay the higher or either US or Swiss Tax on the Federal level and then a Canton tax (equivalent to State Tax) as the local side. Can someone share any insight if they were worst off by all these taxes? Any input will help! Thank you

You really need you employer to sort this one out. To a certain extent, it can depend on Canton. Normally, when a foreign worker arrives in Switzerland with a valid work permit, they will be liable to 'tax at source' - in the German speaking part this is called 'Quellensteuer', and is deducted from your monthly income automatically. This includes the Cantonal tax and the Gemeindesteuer(Taxe de Commune) which is the tax levied by the local government where you are registered. Some Cantons also tax foreign workers in the same way as Swiss - this means there is no monthly deduction, just a tax form to fill in and a bill three times a year. If you have special deductions to make, you can normally ask for a form at your local tax authority, but in most cases tax deduction at source is fair. US citizens are apparently obliged to pay some sort of minimum tax in the US. You would have to ask the US authorities about this. This may be confusing at the moment, but it's really quite simple, and it's really the job of your employer to make things clear to you. Switzerland may be very small, but, like the USA, it's a federation and not all Cantons work the same way.

Absolutely...and it is very difficult to get. Use site below to research/request visa info.
2 :
US citizens can only stay in Switzerland for 90 days out of every 180 days as a tourist. Getting a long-term visa is difficult, and permanent residency is next to impossible. You cannot just move there, just as non-Americans cannot just choose to move to the USA. For an American to get work in Switzerland the employer will need to prove that the job cannot be done by either a Swiss citizen or a citizen of the EU. Therefore you will need skills that are not generally available in Europe.
3 :
Legally yes. I moved over there from the United States to be a nanny and I was required to get one before I came but I know there are some people who don't. It really isn't much of a hassle to get one either :) Enjoy Switzerland!

Americans that live/work in Switzerland

Americans that live/work in Switzerland?
I hear that it's nearly impossible to reside in Switzerland if you are not part of EU/EFTA. I've been interested in staying and working in Switzerland for maybe a few years and wondered if anyone knew any tips for being able to get in.

Try to find an American company or Swiss company that has branches in either country and try to contact them. Tell them of your plans and particularly if you are a student, they sometimes offer temp positions to students wanting to gain experience. Good luck!
2 :
You can break into the country using any good Swiss Army knife. Follow these simple directions: Navigate over the Swiss Alps using the built-in compass. If you get cold at any point you can always use the miniature magnifying glass to build a fire. When you reach the border, cut down a small tree using the knife's built-in saw (this might take a while). If you watched the most recent episode of Lost, you'll know what to do next (hmm... was that just a spoiler? *cough*). Lean the tree up against one of the many tall pylons that encircle Switzerland. Do not attempt to walk between the pylons as they generate an almost impenetrable force field of neutrality. Shimmy over the tree using the can opener as a climbing pick. When you're well clear of the force field, simply drop down to the ground. Hurray... you're in Switzerland! Immediately put aside all extreme views and assume a calm, neutral expression. To disguise yourself further, and avoid possible detection, pop a Ricola herbal lozenge and begin yodelling... or making watches... or whatever else they do in Switzerland. Good luck!
3 :
My company has its' world headquarters in Switzerland! I could probably get you in, but you'd likely have to start out in the call center, establish yourself, and then keep an eye on the intranet...they post open positions on there all the time. Sie sprechen Deutsches, Recht?
4 :
Hmmmmmm...swiss chocolate.....
5 :
Your best bet is to get the job in your home country and then come on an expat package. You will, however have to speak German, French or Italian in order to be considered for a position here.
6 :
Most of the Americans I know who live here got transferred in from a major Swiss bank, an insurance company or another company that's expanding in Switzerland, or they're doing a PhD or post-doc here. Or they're married to a Swiss.

Switzerland Work Permit Applicants are divided into two types of people when applying for a work permit for Switzerland. Those who are members of the European Community are allowed to live and work in Switzerland already, and so do not need a Swiss work permit. However, those who are Third Country Nationals and not citizens of the European Community will need a visa for working in Switzerland. The Swiss work permit can only be submitted by an employer on behalf of someone who would like to work in Switzerland. It must be proved by the employer that the provision of a work permit for Switzerland will not result in a Swiss resident or citizen missing out on the opportunity to work in the company. However, this Local Worker Priority does not apply to intra-company transfers of executives or highly qualified specialists who will be working in Switzerland. There are many a short-term residence and work permit for Switzerland available if you are only staying for one year. These can be renewed once and only for a total of 18 months, for further education or similar activities. Switzerland work permits "B" for stays of more than one year first available for one year and can then be extended as needed. A Switzerland work permit that falls under the federal quota system is granted to qualified specialists. Alternatively, for temporary activities, a Swiss work permit for up to four years can be gained. If you are not a specialist worker or European citizen then speak to a Global Visas immigration lawyer for help with your work permit for Switzerland. With almost a dozen teams located around the globe, help is never far away
2 :
You can pretty much count on never getting any employment visa to Switzerland. Only employers can apply. Priority goes to Swiss citizens, and company must prove there are no citizens available who meet their specific requirements. Second priority is citizens of other EU countries. Company must prove no EU citizens, as well as no Swiss, with the necessary qualifications. Unless you are a senior exec or highly specialized technical expert for a company in your own country who wants to transfer you to their office in Switzerland, it is nearly impossible to get a temporary work visa in Switzerland. They issue very, very few of them. And if you go there for school, student visas are issued on the condition that you will return to your country of citizenship immediately upon completion or termination of studies. Switzerland, Germany, Japan, a few others, are among the most difficult countries in the world to obtain residency, citizenship, or even temporary employment visas.

It is extremely difficult to get a work visa to work in a foreign country. you must have a job skill that is needed there...and often must have a job offer and documentation of enough income to support yourself. You need to start your research by going to the websiteds of the embassies ofSwitzerland and Austria to read their requirements for getting a work visa. the first website below gives contact info for the Embassy of Switzerland. They do not give work visa info on the website...you have to call or email them with your questions. The 2nd wesite gives info on a residence permit for Austria, and you can also click on "contact' at the top of the page to get their phone number. the next 2 websites are info on working in Switzerland. good luck in your research.

I do have a friend in Geneva, Switzerland. She works for a bank. but what she did was she went into a big bank in the USA then, she applied for a transfer to the bank in Switzerland with the same company. Its easier when the Company backs you up with your Working Visa applications. Nonetheless, learn German or French before you go, its a plus.

There is an agreement for the exchange of young professionals between the United States and Switzerland. Under this agreement it is easy to get a limited work permit if you find a job or an internship. Contact the Swiss consulate for details about the agreement. Btw: To find a job it is recommendable to speak one of Switzerland's national languages.

Depending on your nationality. If you are coming from a first-world European country, that should be easier than if you are coming from a poor, destitute third-world African country.
2 :
If you are an Americn citizen , it is extremely difficult. All other Europeans are ahead of Americans. You must have at least a 4 yr degree and be highly skilled in an area wher they need workers, then find an employer before you can get a work visa. This is true in most of the countries of the world. You can research visa requirements statring with the site below.
3 :
1.) It depends on the country you're from. 2.) You have to proof that you most likely are able to make your living yourself and don't need any money from the state. 3.) Depends from the job you want. Check this link: http://www.bfm.admin.ch/bfm/en/home/themen/arbeit.html

Will a type F plug work in Switzerland

Will a type F plug work in Switzerland?
Germany uses type F electric plugs. Switzerland uses type J electric plugs. Both countries have 230 volts.
Other - Switzerland - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
The Switzerland plugs have grounding pins. I can't really tell from the photos on the referenced page, but the F plugs might fit in there. However, why not just buy the grounded J plug to be safe?
2 :
Switzerland has it's own standard, but most appliances use a simple type C plug (no problem using appliances with that standard wherever they've been bought). Unfortunately a type F plug usually doesn't work in Switzerland, but you may be veeeery lucky and still somehow manage to force it in... Since that's pretty dangerous and in most cases won't work anyway, I'd advise you to get a converter.
3 :
The answer is a definitive NO! If you find a J outlet, you may however plug in a C plug. Any other plug would ruin your appliances. An adaptor would look like this: http://wcs.minibarebones.de/Reisestecker/Reisestecker-Deutschland-%3E-Schweiz::24.html?XTCsid=rlg4edvl1i7182ojqttu5qinr5. Buy it in any super market here, it only costs a few bucks.

How do I get a work permit for Switzerland

How do I get a work permit for Switzerland?
I am a teacher by profession and would like to work in France or Switzerland. Most of the recruiting agencies abroad are looking for people who already hold a permit or who is European. Can someone please advise me how to apply for a work permit on my own? Thanks in advance for your responses. I am a primary school teacher. I am french and I lived in switzerland and now i live close to the franco swiss border in France. First of all in your question, you did not specify what you teach or wether you speak fluently french or german (in switzerland the two main languages are german and french). In France if you want to be a permanent teacher (meaning you can' t be fired, you can not be unemployed) in high school or in middle school and you teach some general subjects like history geography math or litterature, philosophy , you have to be a citizen of an european country and you have to take a national exam (CAPES), or you can apply for a job as a substitute teacher but you still have to be an european. Otherwise I heard if you teach some specific subjects, you are not required to be an european and therefore you can apply for a work permit, not sure though. About Switzerland , I can tell you that they are very strict on immigration for non european citizen. Except Ireland and UK many countries in Europe are very protective with their job markets, I would suggest you either to marry a french man (you get the french citizenship after 2 years one of the easiest with british one, swiss citizenship 10 years, german citizenship 7 years) , or you go there and get a student visa (university is free in France ) and after you get permanent residence and you have to wait for 5 years. If you have any other questions feel free to ask me Life in Swiss is quite expensive but they make so much money. Life in France is great, but you pay a lot of taxes , get ripped off in some way but in return, free healthcare, free university, huge governement benefits;
2 :
1. You do not specify your nationality but I assume that you are Turkish. 2. For Switzerland you can not as a foreigner apply for a work permit on your own but a potential employer has to get one for you. So the process is as follows: you see a job advert for a job in Switzerland, you apply for it, the employer thinks that you are the right person and THEN he has to get a permit for you from the foreigner's police. And only after the employer has done his bit, you might get a work permit, it is not guaranteed.

Austria and Germany are members of the EU. Switzerland isn't. For you got get a job in any of the two EU members states you have to have an offer of a job. An employer would have to advertise the job in all 27 EU countries before taking someone from outside the EU. Generally speaking, it is very difficult to get a job in Switzerland. Again like the EU an employer must make a formal job offer for issue of a work permit. The employer then applies for a residence permit from the police immigration section of the local canton. Decision on granting a permit depends on a series of variable criteria such as the type of job, qualifications, etc
3 :
i´d say Austria and Germany are easier to get in to, Switzerland is harder, you would need to get a job, and also Switzerland isn´t a part of the european union but it is a part of schengen space, so perhaps if you get a job in the other 2 could eventually find one in Switzerland.

The Swiss AC outlets are a different physical format than that used in the US. Their power is 250 V AC at 50 Hz. Adapters exist for these issues. Your tuner will not be compatible with that needed in Switzerland for analog reception: PAL in the German zone or SECAM L in the French zone versus NTSC in the US. Your digital tuner will not be compatible with that needed in Switzerland when they convert to digital in 2009: DVB-T versus ATSC in the US. The bottom line is that you will be better off leaving your Sharp in the US.

How does Direct Democracy work in Switzerland

How does Direct Democracy work in Switzerland?

Civic Participation - 2 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Switzerland is the best current example of direct democracy, using both initiative and referendum. In the initiative process, citizens gather petitions to force an election (referendum) on a proposed law. In Switzerland over the last 120 years, about 240 issues have been put to referendum, only about 10% have gained approval. At lower levels, referenda only require a majority of voters to pass, but at the national level, both a majority of voters and a majority of voting states are required. This prevents states with small populations from being unfairly represented. The Swiss got the idea of double majority from the US Congress, which has both the House of Representatives (representation proportional to population of each state) and the Senate (same representation for each state)

In Porto Alegre, Brazil, some direct democracy is involved for deciding the budget. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Participatory_budgeting

Depends on which country you are from. If you are a citizen of certain places, like in North or South America (except Belize, Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Peru), Europe, Japan, Australia and New Zealand you can stay for up to 90 days with just a passport. In general, when you are wondering the maximum number of days on a tourist visa or eligibility you should check with the website of the Consulate General of the country you want to visit, for the country you are from.
2 :
You can get a visa from atime period of 1 month - to 6 months. It depends on the consulate rules in the country you live in now.

2 :
No, since North America's voltage is 120, as opposed to 220 in Europe.
3 :
It should work, but you will have to import games from US stores because European games work on a different system. Look up the difference between NTSC and PAL and you will understand that. You would also need a power adapter to make it work with the electrical system over there. Not really a big issue. Also if you go the route of buying a PS3 all games would work you bought, but the movies would be region coded to the region of the area you bought the system.
4 :
You wont be able to go and buy games there. Most likely not for your system anyway. If you really wanna get a wii, just get one there. That way if you go to a game store youll find games that will work. Also dont they have different plugs? Like in the usa are plugs are flat. But i heard some countries use round type plugs.

PAL B/G is used in the German speaking cantons and SECAM L in the French speaking part of Switzerland. The new television generation to include the Samsung LE32A656 have European multi-tuners installed which are able to receive all European TV signals. It is impossible to get a normal working permit for a Asian girl in these days. Either you work for an international company sending you to the Swiss subsidiary, you do some schooling in Switzerland or you marry a Swiss guy... Perhaps there is a possibility as a so-called au-pair. If you are young enough (below 23?), you might find a way to get a family-care job combined with some schooling. But then you won't be able to earn enough money to have some left at the end. Link: The official immigration website of Switzerland

So, I am looking for other places to work. Switzerland seem to be a good place to live. Can any one tell me how hard it is to get a job in switzerland? is there any problems with the age? Is there any descrimination? how expensive would it be living there while I am there looking for a job? How can I apply for a job from the United States?

1) Accounting in Europe is a Little different than in US. So, what you learned here, must be re-learn there. 2)Accounting is not where you will find job in Switzerland. There are schools jor business admnistration and accounting in higher education (public) 3) Even having a CPA degree will not suffice there, even less if you do not speak, read and write at lest one of the languages (French or German - Italian is not mandatory, but a plus) 4)If you are lucky, is either get a job in the US with a firm which has a branch in Switzerland (like Procter-Gamble), or work for Swiss company which has offices in the States (like UBS, Credit Suisse, etc.) and ask to transfer there. It may take a few years as well since you are finishing your studies Otherwise, you won't be able to get a worlk permit by just going there and looking for a job. Also, you are saying you don't have a permit in the US.....try to get one thru sponsorship or some employers may help you getting one.

You will have to search fo a job here, then you have to be accepted by the employer, then the employer will have to apply for a work permit, the state will have to grant it and then you can start to work here. As you are not a citizen of the EU, it is very unlikely that the employer will be granted a work permit unless you have very much sought after skills. It is not possible for yourself to apply for a work permit.

if i buy a TV from england will it work in Switzerland

if i buy a TV from england will it work in Switzerland?
I was planning on buying the samsung LE32A455 from england an bringing it back to switzerland because it is cheaper. If i did would it still work here or? thank you for answering the question jack

You'll need an adapter to change the plug, but the voltage and color formats are the same so it should work just fine.
2 :
Usually, a television from the United Kingdom will not work in Switzerland since they have a different signal type. Whereas PAL I is used in England solely has Switzerland two signal types. PAL B/G is used in the German speaking cantons and SECAM L in the French speaking part of Switzerland. The new television generation to include the Samsung LE32A455 have European multi-tuners installed which are able to receive all European TV signals. You will just need a plug adapter for the standard European 2-pin round plug. Go to Zermatt such a cool village that you need to take a train to, well people that work there can drive in I think. You could find work there for sure. Gets quit busy. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zermatt
2 :
Do you speak italian, french or German? If so then look in the different Cantons where that language is spoken. If you don't speak any of these languages, and Spanish is your native language, you might choose the Italian speaking region, since both spanish and italian are both Romance languages and somewhat similar, so you have a better chance of getting a job. Maybe try Zermatt. I know an Argentinian who worked in a restaurant in a resort in Wengen. I worked in Grindelwald which had a decent nightlife scene with all the foreign workers hanging out and partying together. The Swiss are also very serious about their skiing, and you would need good experience and credentials if you want to be a ski instructor or ski patrol, especially not speaking the language. Bar, hotel, and restaurant work is more realistic However you might be a little late in getting a job. Most of the resorts already opened or are opening this week. The busiest time is christmas-new years. Some places hire more people than needed to work over this time period, then fire the worst workers and just keep the best
3 :
Go to Andermatt: At the crossroads of the Alps, in the Urseren Valley, this picture-postcard town lies at the junction of two alpine roads -- the St. Gotthard highway and the road to Oberalp and Furka. From the top of Gemstock, reached by cable car, you can see 600 alpine peaks. Hikers, cross-country skiers, and mountain bikers are attracted to this little backwater. The life of the town is centered on the main street, some sections of which are still paved with granite stone. it is very nice there.
4 :
1. the season has already started. 2. what other languages do you speak? german, english, french, italian?? if no other language, forget it. 3. as you are argentinian, it is very unlikely that you will get a work permit. (sorry)

Will my Canadian wii work in Switzerland

Will my Canadian wii work in Switzerland?
I'm moving to Switzerland and I wanted to bring my Wii, I know they operate at 220 Volts and 50 Hz instead of 110 and 60, and I know it won't be a problem finding a converter for that, and I also know that games that I would buy over there will not work with my wii, but I wasn't sure about the video inputs in their TV's, will my yellow white and red cables still work over there?

I would suggest getting a power converter. you could probably get it at any canadian tire. my friend moved here from holland and he just bought a converter. :) happy to help.
2 :
it wont work unless you switch the wii internal memory to switzerland that from North America.
3 :
It will definitely work, but everything might be black&white. It really depends (on the TV I think / PAL/NTSC). For instance, I have an American Wii working in Poland (absolutely no problems, everything works perfectly), but I have a friend in Germany who had the black and white problem. Anyway, there is a way to solve this problem, but I didn't try it because my Wii just works flawlessly (and so can yours and I hope it will), so I don't guarantee this will work, but here's what you could buy: http://cgi.ebay.ca/TV-Video-System-NTSC-to-PAL-AV-Converter-Adapter-New_W0QQitemZ270349771988QQcmdZViewItemQQptZVideo_Games_Accessories?hash=item270349771988&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1215%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318 And if you would like to buy games in Switzerland and be able to play them, watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kg-FTdrWM6Y or download Syndicate's Wii NTSC PAL Patcher Hope this helps Good luck

I would assume so, but just check with the company first, but you cannot become a citizen of Switzerland unless you have a visa.
2 :
Switzerland has a bilateral agreement with the EU which gives permission to those citizens to work there. "EU / EFTA nationals still require a residence permit and a work permit but have equal opportunities alongside Swiss jobseekers on the job market. Nationals of EU enlargement countries are subject to temporary provisions. Restrictive job market provisions and provisions concerning foreign nationals apply to third country nationals if they want to work in Switzerland. All foreign nationals already in gainful employment in Switzerland are subject to the same employment law provisions (work contracts, employee protection, etc.) as Swiss employees. For more information follow the link below and browse through the header on the left-hand side menu under the heading WORK. Hope this is what you were looking for.
3 :
Can, am and do! I was here already though (my husband is Swiss), it's less easy to find work if you aren't already resident in Switzerland. But as explained above, easier than if you're not EU.

How to make Indian mixie work in Switzerland?
I have an indian mixie which has a three pin plug. I could not get a convertor so that it can be used in Swiss. So i cut the plug and tried to connect it via swiss 3 pin plug by connecting the wires. However the fuse went off :-( Actually there are 3 wires black, red and green. I connected black as neutral and other two as -ive and +ive. Do you know how to fix this? Am i connecting the wires properly?

Will a monitor bought in the UK work in Switzerland

Will a monitor bought in the UK work in Switzerland?
I'm going to be relocating to Switzerland and was going to buy some new hardware. Should I get it in the UK and just use an adaptor plug, or are there issues with voltage and what have you? Thanks for the feedback. Does that mean I could actually just screw on new plugs to my cables, or are European plugs not designed to do that in the same way as British ones?
Other - Electronics - 1 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
It will work fine in Switzerland - you can get a cable with a continental plug and then you won't have to use an adaptor. The monitor should have a computer style power input (into which you would plug your power cable). In Switzerland you'd pick up a cable that would completely replace the one that came with your UK monitor and would have that same computer style end along with the proper Swiss-style plug.

They will work, but you will need to make sure you plug it into a European outlet adapter. You can pick them up anywhere, (Wal Mart, Target, Airports, CVS, etc…). They usually cost anywhere from $10 - $30, depending on the model and number of connections it supports.

don't forget to purchase a step-up voltage converter. 110 in us, 230 in switz. ;)

How does the grading system in school work in Switzerland

How does the grading system in school work in Switzerland?
Like here in america it's A,B,C,D,F but over there it's something with numbers 1 through 6?? How does it all work?
Other - Switzerland - 3 Answers

1 :
6 is perfect or very nearly perfect (depends on the teacher, some refuse to ever give a 6) 5 is very good, probably still equivalent to an A or at least A- 4 is good, about a B 3 is not good, a D or F 2 is really bad I don't know if anyone actually gets 1s. There are also partway marks, like 4-5 or sometimes 4.25
2 :
They go by point system like GOG said
3 :
Its exactly like GOG said. We have numbers, 1-6. (6 is the best, 1 the worst). In tests, the teacher can give us every grade he wants to. For example a 5.19. But in the school report, they'll round our grades (it's simple, a 0.24 will be rounded down and a 0.25 will be rounded up)...you are just able to get grades like this: 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3........5.5, 6! It's pretty hard to get a 6, it's almost impossible. Some teacher say: "I'll just pass out a 6 if the student is smarter than me". But there are some people that get a 1.

I dont know if its true, but I'm going with no due to the popular belief that western electronics dont work on the eastern side o' earth.
2 :
of course
3 :
No it wont work because different places in the world have different electrical volts and if you take your xbox there it might either explode or it wont have enough energy.
4 :
There are three different television broadcast formats in the world: NTSC, PAL, and SECAM. Each of these are incompatible with each other. The U.S. uses NTSC, so you need to find out what the country you're going to uses for it to show up on the screen. Then there's the power plugs. Most countries use different shaped plugs and you'll need adapters to plug it in. Last is voltage. The U.S. uses 110 and some countries use 250, plug in your system and it gets fried instantly. You'll need a converter. So, if you the country you're going to uses NTSC you're OK you can always adapt the other things. If it doesn't there's nothing you can do.

Switzerland, although not a EU member, is adopting the right of free movement for citizens of member states of the European Union. So get you a job a Switzerland, come to work for 90 days per year without any permit, just get the regular registration done by your employeer. If you want to stay longer you need to apply for a permanent work and residence permit within 8 days after your arrival, The attached link provides more detailed information. Edit: Here is a collection of FAQ concerning immigration from a EU country FAQ - Frequently asked questions Citizens of the EU17/EFTA are nationals of one of the following countries: France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain, Portugal, UK, Ireland, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxemburg, Greece, Cyprus, Malta, Norway, Iceland und Liechtenstein 1. Scope of application I am an EU/EFTA national, do I benefit from the Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons? The provisions of the Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons applies to the nationals of all EU member states, with the exception of Bulgaria and Romania who have joined the EU on January 1 2007. For the accession countries of 2004, except Cyprus and Mata, (EU 8) there are still certain restrictions with regards to first time access to the labour market (see FAQ EU 8). Citizens of EFTA (Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein) are subject to the same regulations as the EU 17. I would like to move to Switzerland, what are my options? You can take up residence in Switzerland if you fall under one of the following categories: • You are an employee or self employed person • You are a student and are admitted to study at an officially recognised educational institution • You can dispose of sufficient financial means for you and your family and have a health insurance plan that covers all risks during your time of residence 2. Residence with gainful activity I would like to work in Switzerland. What do I have to take into consideration? Gainful activity up to 3 months: EC/EFTA nationals taking up a job in Switzerland may stay in Switzerland without a residence permit for three months in a calendar year. However, their employer is obliged to register them with the authorities. This can be done online using the following procedure (not yet available in English): Gainful activity for more than 3 months: Within 8 days of their arrival and before actually taking up work, nationals of EU17/EFTA have to register with the communal authorities at their place of stay and apply for a residence permit. A valid ID (or a valid passport) as well as a written confirmation of employment have to be presented. In principle the so called "Zusicherung der Aufenthaltsbewilligung/Assurance d'aurorisation de séjour" is no longer issued, because the transitional measures concerning EU17/EFTA were lifted on June 1 2007. All necessary steps for obtaining the work and residence permit can be taken after arrival in Switzerland. For information on the customs regulations concerning your household effects please consult with the Swiss Federal Customs Administration. 3. Types of permits What types of work permits are there, and how long are they valid? Short term L EG/EFTA permit: Employees receive this permit if they have a work contract of less than one year's duration: The validity of the permit is identical with the duration of the contract. B EG/EFTA residence permit: Employees receive this permit if they have a work contract for twelve months or more, self employed persons receive it upon proof of effective self employment. Persons without gainful activity receive it if they can prove sufficient financial means and a comprehensive health insurance. The permit is valid for 5 years and renewable. G EG/EFTA cross border commuter permit: Employees and self employed entrepreneurs receive this permit if they are EU/EFTA residents and work in Switzerland (employer or business location). They must return abroad at least once a week. They may stay in Switzerland during the week, but have to register with the communal authorities at their place of stay. For EU17/EFTA nationals no border zones apply, residence can be anywhere in the EU/EFTA, the workplace anywhere in Switzerland. C EG/EFTA settlement permit: After 5 years EU17/EFTA nationals (except Cyprus and Malta) are granted a settlement permit based upon agreements of reciprocity with their respective countries of origin. Its validity is unlimited; there is a control period of 5 years. 5. Job seekers Do I first have to find a job in Switzerland, or can I immigrate before? EU/EFTA nationals may enter Switzerland for job-hunting purposes. No permit is required for a period of up to three months. If they have not found a job after this time, a short-term residence permit (L permit) will be granted for another three months' job search. 6. Professional mobility Am I allowed to change jobs or places of residence? Yes. EU/EFTA nationals are entitled to professional and geographical mobility. Employees do not need a permit to change professions and jobs. However, holders of short-term permits need a permit in order to be able to become self-employed (limited occupational mobility). A permit covers the entire territory of Switzerland. It is not necessary for the place of residence and the place of work to be in the same canton. When permit holders move house, they must notify the communal authorities 7. Who issues the permits? Where do I have to apply? EU 17/EFTA nationals sort out their stay upon registration with the communal authorities after their arrival. More details can be obtained from the respective communal authorities or the cantonal migration authorities.

Yes you can apply for the Schengen visa. Get the visa application from any of the Schengen country or preferably from the country you want to enter into first. Along with application you'll have all the requirements listed such as health insurance, confirm hotel booking, travel arrangements, bank statements etc. Fulfill those requirements and apply for the visa. Meanwhile if you have any further query ask the embassy. They will assist you.

How does the tax system in Switzerland work

How does the tax system in Switzerland work?
I know Switzerland is a nice country. From what I know, nice countries have high taxes. So can anyone tell me how the tax system in Switzerland works?
Switzerland - 1 Answers

Switzerland has low taxes compared to other countries. The tax system in Switzerland is decentralized. Therefore every commune has different tax rates. Some places are real tax heavens. How much you have to pay highly depends on the place you live and on your income. Because you are a foreign resident your employer would deduct the income tax directly form your monthly salary. So the system would be very simple for you.

If you have EU citizenship and if you can proof fluency in German, French or Italian (not only beginner's knowledge), no further requirements are needed. You then can apply for a job like a Swiss citizen. For high ranking managment positions English sometimes will also do. If you are not a citizen of a EU country, you must have very highly specialized skills neither a Swiss or EU citizen can provide. You must proof this with the appropriate documents (diplomas and such). Then only you could try to convince a future employer to hire you. He then would have to ask for a working and residency permit - you can't do this yourself. In reality, this procedure is limited to very few people each year. Please also consider that the worldwide downturn had a significant impact onto the Swiss market. Even for Swiss citizens, jobs are scarce these days.
